Derek Shropshire grew up in a small town just outside of Gatlinburg. He started working in Gatlinburg’s hotel industry at the age of 15 and continued to do so throughout college. Derek has worked in virtually every aspect of the hotel business; including housekeeping, front desk, sales, management, and marketing. Derek’s expertise on all things Gatlinburg was amassed through his work with and in area businesses.

While working in hotels, Derek noticed how many Gatlinburg tourists seemed so ill-prepared for their vacation. Most of the information contained within this site was inspired by a question Derek was once asked by a curious tourist.

Derek currently lives a few miles from Gatlinburg with his lovely wife and two young sons. He is an avid fly fisherman, reader, hiker, and squirrel dog trainer. The vast majority of his free time is spent doing one of these 4 things.

Along with managing this website, Derek is also a freelance copywriter who assists hotels with the writing and editing of their sales copy and website content. He holds a degree in English.
